Dasun Shanaka set to takeover captaincy from KJP

It is learnt from SLC sources that all-rounder Dasun Shanaka is likely to replace Kusal Janith Perera as captain for the upcoming home series against India.

This news comes in a backdrop where coach Mickey Arthur had praised Kusal’s captaincy during the England tour, as one of the positives in the tour.

If the move goes ahead, Kusal Perera’s captaincy will cease prematurely with 6 ODIs and 3 T20Is, only recording one win under his captaincy.

It also has to be noted that Chief selector Pramodya Wickramasingha, prior to the Bangladesh tour informed that Kusal’s captaincy is not a permanent appointment, but an experiment.

Dasun Shanaka on the other hand has experience leading the national side as he famously lead a young team to victory against the strong Pakistanis back in 2019.

The T20 team lead by Shanaka, missing many seniors who opted out of the tour due to security concerns, whitewashed the then No. 1 ranked Pakistan in their home soil.

A formal announcement expected in next 48 hours. (CricWire)
