Day 1 Update: World Test Championship (WTC) final

Play was called off on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton due to rain.

Not a single ball was bowled on the opening day of the WTC final due to inclement weather. Toss was also delayed earlier on Friday because of rain.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to Twitter to reveal that the play will start on the scheduled time on Saturday — 3pm IST. The New Zealand board tweeted that 98 overs will be bowled on Saturday.

There is a Reserve Day for the final and the ICC can use the 6th day to complete the play

When will the reserve day be used in the ongoing WTC final? Will both the teams play even if there are no chances of a result? Here’s what the ICC’s rule states –
June 23rd is the Reserve Day for the WTC final. As per the ICC’s official release, the 6th day will only be used if the lost time cannot be recovered through normal provisions. There are a couple of ways to recover the time lost. The day’s play being extended by 30 minutes is the most commonly used provision as the teams often fail to bowl complete 90 overs in stipulated time. Another way to recover the lost overs is by resuming the next day’s play 30 minutes early. It is mostly used if a part of the day’s play is washed out. If the overs lost aren’t recovered by these provisions, then there will be a Reserve Day in the WTC final
