Sri Lanka Cricket chief selector Pramodya Wickramasinghe has revealed his reasoning behind the appointment of Kusal Janith Perera as the ODI captain. He expressed these views in an interview with Derana TV.

“First of all, a captain should earn his place in the playing XI. We looked at a few players and made several hypothetical teams according to different situations to see if that player can take his place in that team” he said

“Kusal is someone whom we thought qualifies in such circumstances, plus he is an experienced player with leadership exposure too”

Pramodya Wickramasinghe also said that they are looking to build a team focusing on the 2023 World Cup. He said that this is not a permanent appointment, but a ‘trail period’

“I told Kusal that we are going to give him the opportunity for two tours and then to prove himself as the leader. If he is successful we will continue, if not we will look at other options” he went on to say.

“We want to make a steady team within this year as we focus on the 2023 World Cup. So we have time to make adjustments if required”

Pramodya went on to say that he also spoke with the other seniors and explained them that this isn’t the the end of the road for them.

“I spoke to the other seniors individually and explained them that even though we are looking at youngsters, the seniors are not out or our plans. If they can prove their fitness and be performing equally with the younger players, they are also in our plans” The chief selector went on to say
